Termite Barriers

There are a few kinds of termite barriers available to install if you want protection against subterranean termites for your home. Some of them are installed during the construction of the building and some after the construction. Pre-construction termite barriers, If you are planning to lay a concrete slab to build your home, remember termites seem to enjoy foraging under the slab. They search for small openings or cracks into your home. Cracks in the concrete or the space between the water pipes and slab or electricity conduit and slab are more than big enough for them to utilize. In order to prevent their entry, there are a few physical barriers available to choose from.

One of the most popular ones is Kordon from BAYER. It looks like a thick orange color plastic that contains insecticide. If installed correctly, it can protect your home for many decades. Termites will simply die if they get in touch with the material. It is usually installed where termites can enter your home undetected, including water and sewerage penetrations through the concrete slab. It is also laid between the concrete and the first brick to stop subterranean termites crawling into your home undetected. Spraying with termiticide or termite insecticides is also a great way of protecting your home against termites, however, the new environmental chemicals will only last up to 10 years. Some companies offer special granules that you lay around the slab, between the brick cavity and penetrations. It consists of a sandy material where termites can neither crawl through or move it in order to reach your home.

Remember the more money and time you spend installing pre-construction termite barriers, the less you have to worry in the future. Prevention is better and cheaper than cure.   Post-construction Termite Barriers If you need termite barriers for your existing home, your immediate option would be chemical barriers.

There are two types of termiticides or termite insecticides available for this purpose.

  1. repellent termite insecticides
  2. non-repellent termite insecticides

Repellent termite insecticides are much cheaper to buy, but they are more toxic to other animals and humans. Termites will sense the danger when they come in contact with them. Many of them die instantly and others will avoid the area. However, if they can find a gap in the barrier, they can reach your home through that gap and cause damage. non-repellent termite insecticides are much more expensive but much less toxic to other animals and humans. Termites will not be able to sense the chemicals and they die slowly. This delayed effect means that they can pass the poison to the other members of the colony. Even if there are gaps in your termite barriers using non-repellent chemicals, you may still be covered as subterranean termites forage randomly and sooner or later they come in contact with the poison and pass it on to the rest of the colony.

For existing homes, you may want to install a perimeter barrier. This involves trenching where possible and drilling holes where there is a concrete slab on your way, for example, your driveway. After that, you inject your termiticide in accordance with its label in order for protecting your home against the subterranean termites. If your home is on piers and you have access to the subfloor.
