Subterranean Termites Treatment

What Is Subterranean Termites

For every acre of land, you may find about fourteen termite colonies in the area. This will in turn tell us that every home may have up four ground termite colonies in the close proximity to the house. This is a very scary thought when we think about the devastation they cause. Because these colonies may have up to a million ground termites in each one, you might just not see them, but they are more than likely in your home.

Ground termites, also known by their specie name of subterranean termites live everywhere. This populated species lives in nests and in some cases the group becomes to big for one nest and many tunnels lead to other nests where the rest of them reside. There are actually millions of tunnels connecting the entire community of termites together.

Worker termites search out food sources and bring food back to feed the colonies. They seek out logs, stumps, rotting trees, woodpiles and plant debris. Once they find the food source, they feed until they have devoured the source. Once they deplete the food source, they search for more wood, which leads to your home. This is when the problems start, which can cause ruins in no time.

The ground termite has a keen sense and leaves a trail similar to a breadcrumb trail so that others can join in the feeding. Once they start feeding on your home the only way to get rid of them is by extermination. In some cases, a professional will return year to year to ensure the procedure is still working and the termites have died and left the area.

Subterranean Termites Treatment

You can prevent termites from getting close to your home with a pesticide known as termiticide, which you apply to the soil, which will repel the ground termite as well as kill the colonies. Once you apply the pesticide to the area around your home, the termite will be prevented from reaching the wood source and are forced to move to the neighbor’s house. It is always a good idea to inform neighbors of this due to the fact that termite travel to the nearest source.

Once you see your first termite, you need to inspect everywhere in your home, including the attic and furniture as well. The ground termite does not discriminate, they will attach to anything that is wood. Wood molding, windowsills and yes even your hot tub surround. Even if you have treated deck wood, termites will feed on this as well, which could result in injury if they are not caught. The wood will become unstable and eventually collapse when someone walks on it.
